- **Event Description**: Now in its 8th year, this Special Interest Group event builds on the Urban Climate Walk format, creating space to explore Daylight MattersAbout this EventDaylight Matters | 8th Annual ‘Urban Climate Walk’ Special Interest Group Event; City of London. Please join us for our 8th annual Special Interest Group Urban Climate Walking tour through the City of London where we will be joined by Victoria Soto Magan and Luisa Brotas, two leading experts in daylight-responsive urban design and solar-conscious planning. This event provides a platform to discuss both the challenges and opportunities of creating high-quality public spaces with optimal access to daylight and sunlight, and why this matters for wellbeing, comfort, and urban vitality.Established in 2014, the urban climate walking tour was developed as an instructional technique for linking together diverse aspects of urban sustainability. The tour leads us through a series of urban streets and public spaces, where we explore some of the consequences of building and urban design decisions on the background climate, access to passive resources and health and wellbeing. In this edition the tour will provide an opportunity to discuss the quality of these spaces in terms of daylight and sunlight access, shading strategies, and the design of light-filled, comfortable, and healthy urban environments.By physically experiencing the interdependent relationships between urban geometry, daylight, and sunlight, participants gain valuable insights into how city design influences access to natural light, outdoor comfort, energy efficiency, and health and wellbeing.Join us on this illuminating journey as we deepen our understanding of the complex connections between urban form, daylight and sunlight, and sustainable urban living. The walk takes between 2 and 3 hours giving plenty of time for discussion; the walk can be done under all weather conditions… In fact, the harsher the conditions the more dramatic the walk …. Sensible clothing and footwear are essential!11AM | 15th November 2025 | 8th annual Special Interest Group Urban Climate Walking | Daylight Matters| with Victoria Soto Magan and Luisa BrotasDr Julie Futcher (curator) is a chartered architect from professional practice; with significant experience in both research and research-led teaching. Her research explores the direct, indirect, and dynamic influence of urban morphology in regulating the energy exchanges that characterise densely built urban landscapes. Importantly this includes the influence of built form on access to passive resources (i.e., day and sunlight and street scale ventilation), air quality and in turn, the physical outcomes on the neighbouring setting. Her research interest lies in drawing attention to many of the interdependent net-energy outcomes which currently fall outside the broader discussion on sustainable development. She is currently developing an interdisciplinary planning framework that integrates existing urban knowledge at a fundamental level.Luisa Brotas; is an architect and has a PhD in Daylighting and Planning. She has a profound knowledge of subjects associated with sustainability in the built environment gained in 20 years of experience in research and academia, including a role as Course Leader of an MSc Architecture, Energy and Sustainability at London Metropolitan University. Luisa is currently working at the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames as Sustainability and Infrastructure Lead.Victoria Soto Magan; is a multidisciplinary consultant and researcher specializing in daylight and sunlight in the built environment. With a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering and over nine years of international experience, she combines expertise in environmental performance modeling, human-centric design, and sustainable architecture. As Principal Consultant, Victoria has led high-profile daylight and sunlight assessments for complex urban and residential developments in London, advising architects, planners, and developers on compliance with local and national policies and standards. Her research integrates physiological, psychological, and environmental data to optimize visual comfort and circadian health in the design process. She has contributed to academic research at ETH Zurich and EPFL and actively engages with professional bodies such as the CIBSE Daylight Group, advancing best practices in daylighting and sustainable design.Towns and cities where the climate walk is established include; The City of London; Paddington Basin; Fleet Street and the Inner Temple Gardens (Central London); Tottenham, Haringey (Greater London); Bath Spa; Birmingham City Centre; Canterbury; Cardiff, Wales; Ipswich Town; Reading; (UK); São Paulo, Brazil; Borlänge, Sweden and Rotterdam The Netherlands Upcoming walks planned for Lisbon, Portugal; Bristol; and Glasgow, Scotland.
